  • No pressure to start anything
Understanding the change

Perimenopause and menopause, in plain terms.

Menopause is the point when periods have stopped for twelve months. Perimenopause is the time before that, often lasting several years, when hormone levels begin to shift and symptoms can start.

Every woman's experience is different. Some notice hot flushes and night sweats. Others notice poor sleep, low mood, anxiety, vaginal dryness, urinary changes or a change in how they feel about intimacy. Some notice very little.

Because these symptoms can overlap with other conditions, a proper assessment matters. It helps tell what is part of the menopause transition and what may need a different explanation.

What this covers

What a consultation can cover.

A review of your symptoms and history

Time to describe what you are experiencing, in your own words, and how it is affecting daily life.

A review of your hormones, where relevant

Blood tests are not always needed to understand perimenopause, so your doctor will advise whether they would help you.

A personal care plan

Your options explained honestly, including their benefits and risks, and whether any are suitable for you.

Who it is for

This may be right for you if...

  • Hot flushes, poor sleep or mood changes are affecting daily life
  • You are not sure whether what you feel is perimenopause
  • You have vaginal or urinary symptoms that are new to you
  • You want to understand your options before deciding anything
  • You would like a doctor to take your symptoms seriously and explain them clearly
What happens

How it works.

Every visit follows the same four steps, so you always know what comes next.

Consultation

Your symptoms and history, in your own words, with no time pressure.

ii.

Assessment

An examination or targeted tests, only where they will change the advice.

iii.

Personal plan

Your options explained honestly, including those that do not involve medication.

iv.

Follow-up

How you are responding reviewed over time, and the plan adjusted when needed.

Common symptoms

What women often notice.

Not everyone experiences all of these, and some symptoms have other causes. A consultation helps sort out which is which.

Hot flushes and night sweats

Sudden warmth, sweating and disturbed nights.

Sleep changes

Trouble falling asleep, waking often, or waking too early.

Mood and mental wellbeing

Low mood, irritability, anxiety or feeling unlike yourself.

Vaginal and urinary comfort

Dryness, discomfort, urgency or recurrent urinary symptoms.

Energy and concentration

Tiredness, brain fog or difficulty focusing.

Intimacy

Changes in comfort or in how you feel about intimacy.

Common questions

Questions women commonly ask.

How do I know if it is perimenopause?

Changes in your periods together with symptoms such as hot flushes, poor sleep or mood changes are common signs, but they can have other causes. An assessment helps tell the difference.

Do I need a blood test?

Not always. Many women can be assessed from their symptoms and history. Your doctor will tell you whether a test would add anything for you.

Is hormone therapy the only option?

No. There are several ways to support symptoms, and what is right depends on your health, history and preferences. Your doctor explains the options, including their benefits and risks, before you decide.

Can I come before my periods stop?

Yes. Many women seek advice during perimenopause, when symptoms often begin.

Will I be pressured to start treatment?

No. Some women leave with a plan, some with reassurance, and some with a clearer idea of what to do next. You choose what, if anything, to do.
